Mississippi Spay and
Neuter Initiative
Our vision is a Mississippi with no homeless pets.
Mississippi is in a crisis with a cat and dog overpopulation problem.
-
Mississippi has the highest euthanasia rate in the nation.
Source: Veterinarians.org - 90% of pets coming into shelters are not spayed or neutered.
- Homeless animals out number humans 5 to 1.
- Only 1 out of 10 dogs and 1 in 12 cats born will ever find a forever home.
- Cats and dogs can go into heat as early as 5 months old.
- Cats can have up to 3 litters per year, with an average of 4-6 kittens per litter; and dogs can have up to 2 litters per year, with an average of 6-10 puppies per litter.
- In just seven years, one pair of unspayed/unneutered cats and their offspring can produce 420,000 cats.
- In just six years, one pair of unspayed/unneutered dogs and their offspring can produce 67,000 dogs.
Health Benefits of spay and neuter
Statistically spayed/neutered pets live 3-5 years longer.
Spaying or Neutering your pets has many health advantages:
Established health benefits include protection against some potentially serious diseases. Spaying female dogs and cats can prevent uterine infection and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Neutering males can eliminate their risk of testicular cancer and reduce their risk of developing enlarged prostate glands.
Behavioral benefits: Spaying a female, eliminates their heat cycles. Neutering a male results in less aggression, roaming and fewer urine-marking behaviors.
Spaying or Neutering your pets keeps the overpopulation of dogs and cats down and saves lives.
